Jewelry Questions

Jewelry specific questions

  1. Do pearls really grow in orange and purple?

  2. The watches say gold-toned and/or silver-toned. What is the quality level?

  3. What is the warranty on the watches?

  4. I see various lengths such as 17 3/4 inches or 7 5/8 inches in the jewelry gallery. Why these unique measurements?

  5. I'm looking for an orange-red bracelet to go with a party dress. How do I know what I'm looking at is the right color?

  6. Do you offer lead-free children's jewelry?

  7. Do you do custom jewelry work?

  8. Can I have you make a clasp change on a necklace or bracelet?

  9. Are magnetic clasps secure? I don't want to lose my necklace.

  1. Do pearls really grow in orange and purple?

Wouldn't it be fun if they did? No, these are dyed by the manufacturer in various fashion colors (as are many stones). These dyes allow us to create the unique looks you see in the Rose of Sharon gallery and are considered standard practice within the jewerly industry. Colorful and unique shaped pearls are the norm now - especially since AAA grade freshwater and cultured pearls are beyond the means of most jewelry lovers.

Dyes are typically color-fast; however, we do recommend care when wearing. Never wear your jewelry in a pool as chlorine will damage metals, gems and pearls.

  2. The watches say gold-toned and/or silver-toned. What is the quality level?

We use the most popular jewelry-makers brand (typical Geneva) in base metals in silver, gold and marcasite-tones. These battery-operated watch faces come in a wide variety of great decorative designs suitable for transforming into watch art. These are fun watches at an economical price point so the quality level is below the typical "daily wear" watch brand. They are pretty durable and make watch wearing part of your creative personality. We ship all watches with a fresh battery to extend its life.

  3. What is the warranty on the watches?

The manufacturer offers a 30-day warranty; however Rose of Sharon Jewelry will provide an extended warranty as follows. If your battery fails within one year of purchase, we'll send you a new one at no charge. If the watch fails within 3 months of purchase, return it and we'll replace it with a similar face style (we'll send a picture for you to approve) at no charge.

  4. I see various lengths such as 17 3/4 inches or 7 5/8 inches in the jewelry gallery. Why these unique measurements?

There are standard lengths for necklaces and bracelets within the jewelry industry. See our necklace chart. However, when creating handmade jewelry with natural organic components you don't always end up with exact lengths. Handmade beads, freshwater pearls and artisan created claps all vary slightly in size. As artists we concentrate on the finished look - so sometimes you'll get a necklace this is a little bit longer. These length variations rarely cause a problem and are part of the charm of true art-to-wear.

To add a bit of length, you can purchase a silver or gold-toned necklace extender at your local Michael's craft store.

  5. I'm looking for an orange-red bracelet to go with a party dress. How do I know what I'm looking at is the right color?

Send us the dress.... No, just kidding. Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee you are seeing the "right" color when viewing a web site. We make every effort to realistically photograph every piece of jewelry, tweak the color just so and then reduce the picture to a web-friendly resolution. The problem is computer monitors vary widely in how accurately they display colors. Other issues such as room lighting, type of display and whether the monitor has been color calibrated will affect what you see at your end.

You may see the perfect orange/red bracelet but the actual bead is true red. So what's a girl to do? Send us an email (we may have other pics we can email you) or just take a leap of faith. If for some reason, the jewelry you select just isn't a color you can wear - we will accept it as a return. Simply contact us, tell us your story, then pay for the return shipping.

  6. Do you offer lead-free children's jewelry?

Yes, we do for children over age 6. All jewelry items which we list under Special People - Children are made from carefully selected lead-free components purchased materials from reputable U.S. sources that guarantee lead-free content.

Other handmade items listed throughout the Rose of Sharon Jewelry site may have components purchased before the increased vigilance by jewelry manufacturers for lead content. Therefore, we do not recommend these for children.

PLEASE NOTE: Many common jewelry components have a minute amount of lead content- such as Swarovski® crystals. These are certified as safe for wear and do not pose any health hazard. For additional information, see our detailed article on Jewelry Safety.

  7. Do you do custom jewelry work?

At this time, none of the Rose of Sharon jewelry designers are accepting requests for custom work. There are some standardized items listed in the Special Occasion and Special People galleries with selectable options such as color, alphabet letter or specific charms.

But we never say never - so feel free to contact us and ask . Your message can be directed to a specific artist if their style suits your fancy or we can jointly review your request.

  8. Can I have you make a clasp change on a necklace or bracelet?

Sorry we do not make clasp changes. All original Rose of Sharon Jewelry pieces are carefully created with a specific clasp integrated into the overall piece. Making changes would require restringing the entire piece and is not a service we offer. We do our best to provide quality clasps that are not only beautiful but are easy to manipulate and provide adequate security for each design.

  9. Are magnetic clasps secure? I don't want to lose my necklace.

When magnetic clasps first appeared on the market, they weren't a wise choice and often signified a "cheap" product. That is no longer the case and you'll find them on select necklaces we've designed. While the magnets are super strong, we reserve their use for lighter designs. We love the sleek look top manufacturers are incorporating.

Please be careful when opening a magnetic clasp as the extra strong magnets require some nail-breaking effort. Just like when removing that vacuum cleaner plug from the wall - don't yank the cord. Pulling on the strand can cause permanent damage to the necklace or bracelet.
