New Photo Assistant: Thankful Thursday

Want thank my new photo assistant – hubby, Arden.  He caught on fast to the camera while I manned the computer. Shot over 25 new watches in 2 short sessions.

Arden – as the twins would say – You Rock! Here are a few of his shots. I’ll be posting these beautiful handmade watches to  the Etsy store as part of the A.F.F. Jewelry Collection on Sunday.

We’ll be shooting more watch pictures tomorrow and I’ll be working on the computer on Sunday to fill the store.

Honoring Momwatch-103c

I created this watch in honor of my Mom, who has been breast cancer free for over 20 years. She faced it with great courage and strength!

Thankfully, it was caught early and she handled radiation therapy well. Without an annual mammogram, she might not be with us today!

Shoes that Serve: Thankful Thursday

TOMS Shoes feel great – you’ll also feel great when a needy child receives a pair because of your purchase. Their One for One® program has given away over a million shoes.

A big thanks to American Blake Mycoskie who launched a shoe company and a movement. Instead of obscene CEO pay, Blake uses the company as an instrument for good.

Look Great While You Help

TOMS has lots of great looking shoes for women, men and kids at reasonable prices.

I love these cranberry colored wedgies (right). cranwedge-s_1

Elizabeth Warren is Looking Out for Us: Thankful Thursday

Today I’m thankful for Elizabeth Warren, Law Professor & bankruptcy expert, wants to look out for consumers. She the current frontrunner to lead the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. elizabeth-warren1 Warren was selected from Harvard academia to chair the Congressional Oversight Panel over the bank bailout. Appearing regularly on Jon Stewart’s Daily Show. She has shown herself to be a practical, thoughtful consumer advocate – the perfect choice for the newly created Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. She’s not someone in the pocket of the banks or big business – she stands up for consumers! I’d like to share a recent Democracy Now video where she discusses what’s needed to run the bureau and exactly what consumers need to defend themselves against the powerful lobbyist industries who don’t have our best interest in mind!

This second video is a 60-minute lecture on the coming collapse of the Middle Class. Fascinating and riveting. Thank God we have such a learned woman as Elizabeth Warren. Contact your Congressional Representatives and encourage them to select Elizabeth Warren. To learn more about Elizabeth Warren, just Google her. You'll be pleased at what you find.

Thanks to the Nerds in The World: 5 Who Make a Difference

A shout-out of thanks to all the Nerds in the world who have made it a better place. Being a Nerd is now cool as we realize without them we’d still have Polio, live by candlelight and walk to school.

Science and Math still aren’t the most popular classes in High School but the success (and wealth) of the kids who live for Calculus and Chemistry is turning that around.

Today I’d like to thank 5 of the Nerds who are making a difference today.

Temple Grandin

Grandin This autistic Colorado State University professor was the subject of HBO’s Emmy-award winning movie but most people still haven’t heard of her work in animal rights and in exploring how the brain functions. In dealing with her own brain limitations, she has opened up whole new possibilities of understanding.

Nathan Myhrvold

In our world, mosquitoes are annoying pests; but in parts of the world they carry death and disease to millions. Former Microsoft exec, Myhrvold is working on a laser system to stop malaria-carrying mosquitoes to enter buildings.

Mark Roth

Science fiction may become fact if Roth succeeds in putting animals into suspended animation. So far he has put zebra fish and frogs into a deep sleep for 24 hours. Why? Because the potential to place a human into this state could mean doctors have extra time to deal with a medical crisis.

Encourage Science and Math

So many of the world’s issues will be solved by young scientists (aka Nerds). Encourage your child to think of science as a boy_microscopewonderful game and puzzle and math as a universal language. Woman are still under represented in the sciences so girls of all ages should be supported when they show an interest.

It’s the curious little girl who studies butterfly wings or the little boy who wants a microscope that will be the visionaries reimagining the world as it should be and not just how it is.

Troops Returning From Iraq: Thankful Thursday

With the Iraq war “officially” ending, thousands of troops will be returning to their lives. Many will be looking for work, trying to rebuild relationships and seeking medical care.

welcome-vets Thank you just won’t be enough for the men and women who paid the price for our government’s idiocy. But no matter how you feel about the Iraq war, we owe them a lot more than a welcome back sign. And our thanks can only be measured by our long-term response to the physical and emotional needs of these soldiers.

After reading this post, I urge you to contact your representatives in Congress and insist that a comprehensive plan be developed to assist the hundreds of Iraq war veterans. Here’s why they need us:

  1. 1 in 8 are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
  2. Hidden emotional damage and stress factors will impact families.
  3. Over a million Iraq/Afghanistan vets will seek medical care over the next decade
  4. Veterans’ hospitals and clinics are at or above capacity.
  5. Vet’s reluctant to see psychiatric help because of red-tape, long wait periods and stigma.
  6. High homeless rate among all veterans will continue.
  7. Suicide rates exceed national averages.
  8. Spousal abuse by returning soldiers has escalated significantly.
  9. Alcohol and drug abuse is rampant among veterans.
  10. Stigma of service may hurt a Vet’s job search
  11. Poor economy = means no jobs. Although large companies are required to “keep” jobs for Veterans – this simply won’t be a reality for returnees.

I could go on and on but you get the picture. It is our responsibility and duty to support all Veterans.

Here are a few resources to help Veterans.

Be supportive to a Veteran and his/her family with compassion, support and most of all be there to listen.

Walking for Your Dog: Thankful Thursday

Across the country animals lovers are walking FOR their dog friends instead of walking them around the block. This fall several cities are holding charity walks to raise funds for canine cancer research. Today’s Thankful Thursday blog post tells you how to join in!

canine_partners_dog_3 As anyone who has lost a pet to a catastrophic illness knows, vet bills can be budget busters. In helping raise funds for research, you not only help our furry friends; you’re also helping the families that love them.

Here are a few cities I have found that are having walks this fall. I’d suggest contacting some of the national organizations to locate events in your area and calling your dog’s vet for info. If you don’t have an event, perhaps this is your chance to take on a worthy cause and start one in  your community.

Another great thing is most of these events encourage you to bring your dog along for moral support!

  • Allentown, PA (Sept. 25) – Bruiser Memorial 5K and Sarge Memorial 5K sponsored by Bethlehem-Allentown chapter of non-profit National Canine Cancer Foundation. Raising money for University of PA School of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Los Gatos, CA (Oct. 10) – 2 mile walk in Vasona Lake Park. Raising money for non-profit Morris Animal Foundation (MAF).
  • Portland, OR (Nov. 5) – Bark and Bowl bowling event (sort of like walking :). Raising money for the National Canine Cancer Foundation.
  • Long Beach, CA (Nov. 13) – 3K walk for people and dogs sponsored by Veterinary Pet Insurance. Raising money for non-profit Animal Cancer Foundation.
  • Coconut Creek FL (Dec. 5) – Walk in Tradewinds Park. Raising funds for Morris Animal Foundation.

Thanks to all you with tired feet who walk for this good cause. Happy Walking! [bark, bark, bark]

Stimulus $ to Help Victims of Childhood Abuse: Thankful Thursday

$40K in federal stimulus funds to help victims of childhood abuse in Reno area. Free therapy from UNR Crime Treatment Center can expand thanks to this money.

woman-therapist-holding-hands Victims of childhood abuse often have to go it alone as mental health care is barely covered by insurance plans. The university’s Victims of Crime Treatment Center can now expand their free services to childhood physical abuse victims. The center has offering free assistance to sexual assult and sexual abuse victims for over 14 years.

Most of us have seen new construction and road projects being funded with stimulus dollars but to have funds be directed to individual citizens is wonderful.

The Reno-Gazette Journal reports that these funds are “strickly to help victims of physical abuse that happened to them when they were childredn.”  No age limit has been set; however, more recent victims will be given priority.

This service is free for all Nevada residents. For more information, contact, the University of Nevada – Reno at 775-682-8680 or http://sexualassaulthelp.info.

A special thanks to the legislators who cared enough to include this in one of those huge “who-knows-what-happening” bills.
